House System

 An Overview of the House System

At Selborne Primary School every child becomes a member of one of the following four houses.

• Desert - Yellow
• Ocean - Blue
• Rainforest - Green
• Savannah - Red

Our houses all have designated colours and are named after different habitats linking to their Geography and Science learning.

Aims of the House System

The aim of the house system is to give children more opportunities to show how they can use Selborne’s six keys to “Inspire and Achieve” whilst also instilling a strong belief in team work. Through healthy competition, pupils will gain the feeling of responsibility and camaraderie that comes with being part of a team. They will also grow as individuals and use the experiences as an opportunity to show confidence, organisation, getting along, persistence and resilience.

House Captains

At the beginning of the academic year meetings are held to elect House Captains. One boy and one girl from the Year 6 classes are elected from each house. The job of the house captains is to take responsibility for the leadership and organisation of their house throughout the forthcoming academic year.

During the election process, children in year 6 are required to create a short paragraph which explains why they would make a great house captain. Children in other year groups will then vote and a winner is announced during our whole school assembly.

House Captain Role

The House Captain's role is to represent not only their house but their school community.   They play a pivotal part during whole school events such as: sports day, spelling competitions and PE events to name a few. 

House Competitions

Children can earn house points by showcasing exemplary behaviour during lessons, following our school rules at playtimes and by meeting our ‘Keys to success’ (persistence, confidence, resilience, getting along, respect and organisation). 

Every week two house captains will announce who has gained the highest amount of house points during assembly, these scores are then displayed in the hall. At the end of every term, a house reward is organised.

Two house competitions are held every half term throughout the school year; one academic and one sporting. These competitions give the students the opportunity to win house points. These points are totalled at the end of the school year and the house with the most points at the end of the year will win the overall house competition.

Students quickly form an allegiance to their house with each event producing a sense of fun and friendly competition. Everyone is very proud of the house that they are in and children work as a team to collaboratively try to be the most successful in all aspects of school life. 

During house events, students wear a coloured t-shirt to represent their house which is available to purchase from our uniform provider.
